COMMISSIONED MUSIC first appeared in 1995 and is now available as an expanded re-release. As the programmatic title indicates, the album is concerned with commissioned work for theater and film.It is a cold world that we encounter in the plays of the French author Bernard-Marie Koltès - hermetic, darkened and lacking in feeling. Blixa Bargeld's music for his play "Dumpfe Stimmen" (Muffled Voices) marks the stages of a journey to the end of the night. It is an unhurried, slow-motion plunge into a visually rich, atmospherically compact world of sound, which departs from the thoughts of usual song structures and thus characterizes their sound dramas even more lastingly. Aside from the theater music, the CD contains three songs from Uli M. Schüppel's film "Jahre der Kälte" (Years of Cold), which are based on a cadence by Franz Schubert. The fact that these musical images develop their independence - sometimes in roughly sketched miniatures, sometimes in probingly insistent paintings - is principally due to the significance that they take on within their contexts. Whether they are for film or theater scenes, Bargeld creates sounds that are equal to the power of the visual images. They are more than mere illustrations of what can be seen, providing a virtually hypnotic magnetism from within themselves.Formal severity and inner logic characterize these songs, which should not be classified in the context of space or ambient music. Their genre kinship lies elsewhere - in the Musique concrète, in the sound refinement of certain contemporary music, perhaps even in the visions of ambitious rock music. Blixa Bargeld and Roland Wolf develop a sound sensitivity in their songs that speak of a love of detail - and those details appear on the newly mastered version of this album with more defined contours; its entire sound more crystalline. The new edition of the CD was not only enlarged by the two songs "All Alone Am I" and "Magic Moment" from the theater music, but also with music from two videos, "Wie das Baden im Nichts ist" (What It's like to Swim in Nothingness) and "Wundbrand" (Gangrene).
